Jawless Fish Races
Answer fast, swim faster
Jawless Fish Races is a quiz racing game for kids. You race your Sacabambaspis against three others, and the only way to go faster is to answer questions quickly and correctly.
Each question has four answers. Get it right and your fish gets a burst of speed that fades over a few seconds. Answer again before it fades and you stay fast. The computer fish, Speedy Saca, Bambi, and Pip, answer on a timer through the exact same speed rules you do, and they have to read the question too. So if you beat one, you really did answer faster.
There are 14 topics: adding, taking away, times tables and dividing, spelling and opposites, telling time, counting coins and making change, animals, space, the human body, continents and oceans, world capitals, and all 50 state capitals. Math, clocks and coins are generated, so they never run out. Money questions use US coins.
Racing with friends
Hit Friends on the title screen and one kid makes a race. They pick the topic and level and get a five character race code to read out. Everyone else types it in, and the host starts the race once at least one friend has joined. Two to four kids can race, and a computer fish swims in any empty lane so two kids still get a full race.
We built this part with kids in mind first. There is no chat, no public lobby, and no matchmaking, so you only race kids you gave the code to. Names are put together from a list (“Sparkly Pebble”), so nobody types one. Racing on your own stays fully offline. The privacy policy for this game spells out exactly what a friend race sends and what our server does with it (short answer: passes it along and forgets it).
Built with Jawless Fish
This is the second game we have made with Jawless Fish, the plushie company, after Jawless Fishtank. Same fish, same sounds, very different job: this time the Sacabambaspis is helping with homework.
Status
In active development, heading to Steam, Google Play, and the App Store. There is no announced release date yet. When there is, it will show up here and on the devlog.
Highlights
-
Right answers are your engine
Every right answer gives your Sacabambaspis a burst of speed. Keep them coming and you stay near top speed. Get one wrong and you lose a little ground, and your fish blushes about it.
-
Race your friends
One kid makes a race and reads out a short code, and up to three friends join. Everyone gets the same questions, and a computer fish fills any empty lane. Names come from a list, so nobody types anything, and there is no chat.
-
14 topics, three levels each
Math, Words, Time & Money, Science, and Geography, from adding to reading a clock to state capitals. Every topic has Easy, Medium, and Hard, and each one keeps its own best time.
-
Misses come back around
A question you get wrong shows up again three questions later, and the results screen lists every miss with the right answer so you know what to practise.
-
Coins and colours
Every finished race pays coins, even in last place, and coins unlock new colours for your fish. They are just for fun. Every fish swims the same speed.
